First of my next series of illustrations, about relevant species on the human evolutionary tree.
Kenyanthropus platyops lived in Kenya during the second half of the Pliocene. It is based on a cranium, teeth and skull fragments, but is considered very similar to the better known Australopithecus afarensis. It is also associated with the oldest stone tools (choppers, hammers and anvils) ever dated, from the same site (west Turkana) and age. The tools were rather heavy and crude, different from the ones used much later by Homo habilis.
I based the anatomy on Mauricio Antón and John Gurche skeletal and muscular diagrams.
